Are you satisfied with yourself today? You’re a healthy, fit, wholesome, good citizen. Not as healthy, fit, wholesome, and good as Jefferson Smith, a triathlete who used a bikeshare bike.
In the 25-mile segment of the Nation’s Triathlon in September, Smith pedaled a rented 40-pound, 3-speed (pictured at right), earning himself the admiration of community cyclists everywhere. That’s a little like using a washboard to do a month’s worth of laundry to conserve water and feel old-fashioned—a gesture of great meaning … and pain.
“I rang my little bell every time another cyclist passed me by. They got a kick out of it. I think they could see that I was struggling. Later, I passed a few of them who had flat tires. Thanks for a sturdy bike, Capital Bikeshare.”
Did I mention that this was the guy’s first triathlon? Sheesh.
